Orense and dune 40

Orense features various attractions that invite visitors to go on a city tour. Famous Médano 40, Francisco Hurtado Cultural Center, the Grotto and Cristiano Muerto Creek are some of the must visit destinations.

Orense seaside resort is also known as Punta Desnudez (Bare Point) due to the wilderness present at this geographical feature, which makes it an ideal destination for visitors who enjoy quietness.

The hospitality and courtesy of local dwellers tempt tourists to stay longer once they reach the district. It is then when they wish to visit the various attractions in the surroundings of Orense.

The famous place known as Médano 40 -which stands for “Sandhill 40”- is a classic in Orense. This is a big afforested dune whose name comes from the height it used to feature a long time ago: 40 meters. On top of this giant sandhill, a viewpoint offers an impressive panoramic view of the beach resort.

Another mandatory destination is Francisco Hurtado Cultural Center, which contains an account of local history. Besides, in the summer, almost all the activities are organized there.

History goes that this is the first concrete building in the district. It was named after its first owner: don Francisco Hurtado. During the summer season, books give life to the public library called Amigos del Libro (The Book’s Friends), the tourist information office and the culture office.

La Gruta (the Grotto) is another famous spot in these lands of countryside and sea sceneries. This is a spiral construction that houses an image of Virgin Mary and is the aim of the pilgrimages carried out by hundreds of followers that say their prayers and thank the Virgin for her favors.

Not far away, one of the natural boundaries of the district comes into sight: Cristiano Muerto’s Creek. Its name stands for “dead Christian” in Spanish. Several historical events occurred in this place. It was the stage for battles fought between Indians and the men who watched the forts. The creek winds down towards the sea and today it is sailed by many adventurers who do not have a clue about its history.
