Visit to Tomás Jofre

This small rural town, famous for its excellent cuisine, ideal for asado or pasta on Sundays, lies a few minutes away from Mercedes.

Dozens of Restaurants

One, two, three, four, five, six and we could go on up to over a dozen if we counted the restaurants and rural bars that have been established in this picturesque spot in the Province of Buenos Aires to feed thousands of people every weekend.

What both locals and visitors have come to call the First Countryside Cuisine Pole has been settled down in this venue. However, even if the offer is plentiful, it is important to arrive there early if customers wish to get a table.

Every Saturday, Sunday and holiday, the City of Mercedes gets deserted at the same time: most people travel 15 kilometers to the District of Jorge Born, whose railway station is called Tomás Jofré.

Very Argentinian Cuisine

With its restaurants and countryside grocery stores, this district offers a wide range of traditional dishes, such as homemade pasta, asados criollos and pork specialties, as well as the salami and the countryside crackers that have made this zone famous.

At first sight, the old corners in town do not seem to have changed much since its primitive origins. Recycled pulperías or grocery stores are part of the common sense in town, but catch the attention of those who see them for the first time.

Leisure Time

The great protagonists of this place are the restaurants. They become alive when they are filled with customers coming even from towns lying over 100 kilometers away.

4WD vehicles perfectly mingle with horses and carriages creating an invitation to take a picture or to go for a ride around the urban shell after lunch and before the time for mate.

Everybody has their own pace and rhythm as they admire the fields, the streets, the horses and some special show. Those who enjoy nostalgia are amazed at the objects and relics on some of the walls, such as old cookie cans or aperitif bottles thrown into oblivion.

That is Tomás Jofré, a place simply meant to have a good lunch and a great time. And the amounts of customers who come along give evidence of its success.
