Trekking Caviahue is the mountain guide and nature excursion service run by Josefina Cabral in Caviahue, Neuquén. Certified by the Provincial Tourism Secretariat of Neuquén, the National Parks Administration, and the Municipality of Caviahue-Copahue, Josefina leads outings in trekking, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and geo-tourism across one of the most distinctive volcanic landscapes in the Andean Patagonia region.
The excursion calendar is organized by season. In winter, the outings take advantage of the snow and ancient forests of araucarias, lengas, and ñires surrounding Caviahue:
• Cascadas del Agrio snowshoeing: a trail along the Cascadas del Agrio with waterfall stops and passage through snow-covered forest.
• Las Máquina in winter: a mountain traverse to open-air hot springs located in the Copahue volcano sector.
• Cascada Escondida snowshoeing: a trail through araucaria forest leading to a secluded mountain waterfall in a peaceful, quiet setting.
• Laguna Escondida snowshoeing: an uphill route to a highland lagoon with views over the town and the surrounding snow-covered landscape.
• Cross-country skiing: introductory and traverse sessions through forests, lakes, lagoons, and frozen waterfalls.
• Cascada del Jara: a walk through araucaria, lenga, and ñire forests to a waterfall that freezes over completely in winter.
• Puente de Piedra: a short excursion to a natural rock arch with views of the volcanic surroundings.
In summer, the program focuses on volcanic exploration and the high-altitude landscapes of the Caviahue-Copahue area:
• Trekking to the Copahue Volcano crater: ascent to the active crater of the volcano, one of the most emblematic excursions in the region.
• Ascent to the summit of Copahue Volcano: trekking to the highest point of the volcano at 2,958 meters above sea level, on the border with Chile.
• Riscos Bayos excursion: a visit to the area's prehistoric volcanic rock formations with a field snack stop.
• Cerro Pirámide trekking: a route through the volcanic-glacial landscape of Caviahue with highland scenery.
• Puente de Piedra: also available in summer, a short walk to the natural rock arch.
With more than two decades living in Caviahue and a background built through direct contact with the mountain environment, Josefina Cabral has an in-depth knowledge of the territory she explores with her groups. Her outings are designed for those approaching Patagonian hiking for the first time as well as those looking for a more demanding experience in the surroundings of Copahue Volcano.
