Small models and a lifetime passion: the Museum of Classics opens its gates to share the treasure of its creator. |
In former times, when children used to play with more concrete and tangible toys, boys would collect toy cars. Luis Navarro continued doing this all his life and today he shows the result of his work.
In the Glass Cabinets
A few blocks away from downtown Villa Carlos Paz, we found a museum inaugurated early in 2009: the Museum of Classics, the first and only museum of collection model cars in the country.
It began as the story of any child a few years ago, when the then young Luis Navarro discovered he preferred to play with model cars than with anything else.
But that scene unfolded in a very particular way, because Luis did not like playing with the cars as much as he liked having them, taking care of them and showing them around. He would never lend them, he would never break them. He always wanted to have more. |

A Passion for Some, A Passion for All
As time went by, Luis grew up but his passion for model cars continued to be as strong as before. He continued collecting them. He started to work and used part of his salary to increase his collection. At home, already as an adult, everyone had to learn how to co-exist with “the toy cars”.
The time came in which there were so many cars that he started to organize them in glass cabinets. He became a carpenter and built the pieces of furniture himself and hanged them on the walls of his study. They were his pride and joy and he would show them to everyone willing to see them. More than one suggested that he should make his collection public. |

On the Ground and in the Air
Luis retired early due to health matters. He resolved to finally open his museum and in 2009, his dream came true. Today, we can visit the Museum of Classics.
Over two thousand model cars are displayed there, including street and competition cars, trucks, motorbikes, even war tanks, planes and other warfare vehicles used during the two World Wars.
Visiting this museum lets us see how technology developed throughout the Twentieth Century. And not only technology, but also design. More than one will remember some of the cars shown in the cabinets.
But the visit to this museum also represents a journey to the heart of a passionate man who, regardless of what people said, remained faithful to his dream and always knew that playing with cars is not just for children. |
