The zoo opened in 1907 as a somewhat unusual tropical jungle. Along Iraola Avenue, the zoo opens its forged iron doors to give way to the happiness of those who with the entrance tickets in their hands.
Alfredo Plot, the first chairman, was the mastermind of this project. Thanks to the donation of his personal collection of animals, the zoo became more than just a dream. Plot was in charge of the design and distribution of the surroundings while Antonio Cravetti was the engineer in charge of landscaping.
The zoo is organized according to theme patterns to make it more attractive. Visitors only need to ride on a train to enjoy a picturesque journey through lakes, plains and jungles. A whistle blows inviting visitors to start this wonderful adventure. |

There are guided tours on several circuits. The most popular ones are the large Mimosoideae, the environment interpretation area and the feeding visits at the zoo. An option for the blind and visually challenged is the contact with taxidermic samples through specialized guides.
Shake Hands
The guacamayos and the howler monkeys stand out among the noisiest animals. They constantly call people's attention. At the other end is Pelusa, the most famous elephant in La Plata whose sweet look can capture the interest of passers-by.

Nico, the lion, boasts its roar and intimidates tourists from behind the bars of its home. It never gets tired of playing the role of the evil character again and again and it lays tummy up to take a nap.
A few meters from there, lazy turtles sunbathe. They are lying quietly against tree trunks or the banks of a small lake.
Geese, ducks and beavers live in harmony on the islets around the lake.
The arachnids and ophidia share the same place in the herpetarium. The looks of both children and adults are alert to the subtle movements of these animals. |

Just Like Home
Respecting natural life is one of the most important mottos of the Zoo. There is an on-going strong emphasis placed on generating wide spaces for the animals so that they do not suffer their confinement.
Also, the zoo has thousands of plants with exotic and autochthonous species that give a natural frame to recreate the original habitat.
On the other hand, with the advance of veterinary sciences the facility has become a reserve of species in ways of extinction thanks to modern reproduction techniques while in captivity. |

Among the animals bred under this system, we can see the guacamayos, parrots, the spectacled bear or ucumari, Quechua name given to the only bear in South America that has adapted well to these latitudes.
The zoo in La Plata is the only zoo in the country where flamingos reproduce. The zoo participates in conservation projects of South American cats in ways of extinction like the wild cat, the jaguar, the ocelot and the cougar, among others.
