15 Km. to the north of El Chaltén you will find Tunnel Bay, where you can hire an excursion which combines navigation in Lake Viedma, hiking on Viedma glacier and landing on the lake coast for lunch.
To go on this outing called Viedma Discovery you must get to this singular spot before 9:40 hs. and go south on this modern ship called "Huemul", with a capacity for 55 passengers. |

Once on board you will navigate in Lake Viedma and watch mounts Fitz Roy and Huemul.
Around 10 hs. you will arrive at Viedma Glacier and land on a rocky promontory where you will put on your crampons and start a guided hike to the ice caverns and other interesting formations.
Viedma Glacier is second in size after Upsala Glacier, its moraine detached from continental ice, to the west of Mariano Moreno range in a glacier break valley between 2,677 m. high mount Huemul and 2,570 m. high mount Campana. |

Expert guides will lead you to the front of Viedma Glacier, where you will be able to observe the traces of ice erosion and ice caverns. |

This phenomenon is hardly observable or likely to be visited in other glaciers, for what it represents a unique experience. |

After this hike, you return to the ship to navigate by the front of the glacier, where you will see its 55 m. ice walls of innumerable tints of blue.
Near midday you return to Bahía Los Témpanos, where you can rest and have lunch. Then you can go for another guided 45 minute walk to the campsite of Península Ventisquero, where the ship returns for you to go back to Tunnel Bay at 15 hs.
It is very important to carry a snack for lunch and sun screen. |
