The Museo Pampeano in the city of Chascomús treasures faithful testimonies of the colonial history and the Argentine creole life.
The Museo Pampeano, replica of the Casa de Postas Mensajerías Argentinas in San Isidro, inhabited by General Martín de Pueyrredón, is a loyal curator of the entire history of Chascomús.
Unsuspected treasure of the park Los libres del sur, it was founded in 1939 to commemorate the 100 years of the Battle of Chascomús, key event that inserts the local history in the Argentine scene. In that battle, the landowners self-nominated “southern free men” revolted against Rosas administration and were defeated on the lagoon shores.
Conceived from a strong Pampa character, it was created with the purpose of exposing the gaucho life and customs, apart from intensifying such an epic achievement.

Located on the corner of avenue Lastra and Muñiz, trespassing the bars of this white building with tiles laid in clay, roofs made with quebracho beams, ceilings made of reed tied with guasquillas of colt leather, means walking the past of these plains from prehistoric times to the present day.
Under the stamp of a museologist soul, Enrique Udaondo, and going across its seven rooms, we can find from prehistoric animals, such as a gliptodont, to traces of the primitive man, the indigenous culture, the San Juan Bautista fort foundation, the federal times and the traditional Chascomús society, signed by the Basque, French and English immigration.

In the first room, archaeological and paleontological items that illustrate primitive ages are exhibited. Objects made of stone, bone and pottery that evidence existence of human settlements 1,700 years ago, and elements belonging to the indigenous groups that populated the area found in the lagoons are exposed here. In rooms 2 and 3, samples of gaucho art testify pampa life, especially silverware items, boleadoras, spurs, knives and saddles, among other elements.
The next room is dedicated to the battle. It shows red emblems and portraits of Los libres del sur with its reviews.

Room 5 is consecrated to local memories: the collection of objects of ancient families ranging from 1873 to 1940, period during which Chascomús was defining its urban and institutional characteristics.
The space dedicated to the museum founder, Mercedes J. Aldaur, who was a well-known educator and poet, is next. Also, old photographic cameras, a famous oil-photo of General Bartolomé Mitre and an incredible sample of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and ferrotypes can be appreciated.
Lastly, the room dedicated to religious worship, with its missals, reliquaries and all its imagery, evidences the protection of the Virgin of Mercy, chosen as patron saint of the city by Captain Escribano and his troops.
