Natural Amphitheatre

If you take route 22, 65 km. from Neuquén you will find this "moonlike landscape" known as the Amphitheatre.

The enthusiasts of Paleontology and Archaeology can visit this giant crater open in the middle of the patagonian steppe and discover some river water fish fossil remains and observe the yellow clay of lake origin, fine sand and brown pebble of the Superior Cretaceous Period.

You will have the opportunity to walk on these "badlands" where the surface resembles the surface of the moon.
It is ideal to go with a guide, who can explain to you the origin of every sector you walk through.

Be very careful if you wish to descend to the heart of this monumental crater, since the terrain is easily crumbled.
It will not be easy to find steady ground among the jarillas to step on, but it is worth trying.

Once you are there, you can appreciate the diversity of colors and shapes of the deep crater. The guides will tell you that the terrain has been shaped by the water and the wind.
I looks as if a giant has stepped on the ground and left its footprints on the clay block.

It is an excellent opportunity to take photographs, but do not get disappointed when you develop them because the intense violet and deep brown colors of these lands are very difficult to capture.

You will be awed to hear the explanations of the guide about the rounded stones called "clastros" while you recognize the different red layers of the Cretacious era, the yellow ones of marine origin and the different fine sand layers of the Terciary Period.
During this adventure you will travel back in time to the moment when dinosaurs lived in this region.
