In Santa Bárbara Hill, opposite the main square , you will find Heroes of the Independence Monument which is a magnificent work that has turned into a live image of the Town.

Heroes of the Independence Monument
The imposing sculpture group , work of Ernesto Soto Avendaño, was built to pay homage to the Northern Argentinian Army that fought a total of 14 battles in Humahuaca during National Independence War.

The Monument made up of 70 tons of bronze represents the image of native chasqui Pedro Socompa that transmits the news of freedom( even though some people from the region say that the image of the protagonist belongs to Diego Viltipoco, an Omaguaca Indian Chief who helped Belgrano in the Independence Fight.

You will climb the lateral stairs and, at the top, enjoy a panoramic view of Humahuaca with the great homonimous Narrow Path as backcloth. Fifty meters to its left, Santa Bárbara Tower is situated. It used to be part of a Jesuit Chapel which has been pulled down.
