City tour around Goya

Located in the southwest of the Province of Corrientes, Goya is a City that portrays history in its streets. It offers diverse attractions for visitors.

Mitre Square

Located in the very center of town, it features the Pyramid of Liberty in its center, a monument similar to the Obelisk of Paris, holding the statue of the Motherland on its top. This venue was inaugurated on May 25, 1861 by initiative of the then Military Commander Salvador Refojos, who had it surrounded with chains and ornamented with eight period streetlamps.

In the square, a very large fig tree was declared natural monument.

Our Lady of the Rosary Church Cathedral

Standing opposite Mitre Square, it is a real architectural jewel, a reason for constant pride and devotion for the people of Goya.

When in 1806, the regular urban grid was laid out, Juan Francisco Soto donated the physical space where the imposing temple lies today. It started as a simple chapel protected by Our Lady of the Rosary, Patron Saint of Goya.

At present, the Church Cathedral measures 62 m of width and 18 m of height, featuring an impressive central nave and two towers that reach 35 m of height.

On February 19, 1983, one of the towers collapsed. Afterwards, the second tower and the atrium were demolished for safety reasons. The new towers were inaugurated on January 15, 1986.

Inside the building, there is a carved gilded pulpit featuring the image of the four evangelists and the Heart of Jesus in the center.

The Waterfront Avenue and Italia Square

This venue gradually acquired a kind of residential physiognomy that has given hierarchy to this area, thus turning it into a mandatory stop for visitors to the city.

La Rotonda Church

The blueprints of this singular church are exactly the same as those of a church located in Rome (Italy). It is important to highlight its classic architecture and its colorful stained glass windows, which may be fully appreciated inside the building. The remains of the Rolón family rest in a mausoleum under the church. They donated part of their fortune to erect this building.

The Rice Mill

At 120, Primeros Concejales Avenue, there lies Cooperativa Arrocera 12 de Octubre Limitada, founded on October 12, 1953. The two old white platforms where the mill rests are visible from the street. The cooperative employs over 200 family heads and fosters activities such as trade, transportation and services.

San Martín Square

Its center contains one of the three pedestrian monuments of General San Martín in the country. This venue was inaugurated on August 17, 1927. The 2.5-meter-tall figure of the Liberator is made of bronze. It represents the time when he was getting his army ready at El Plumerillo campsite, in the Andes Mountain Range.

The Swallows’ Arrival Monument

The Swallows Monument stands at San Martín Square. These singular birds reach the City of Goya on November 24, after traveling 12,000 km from San Juan de Capistrano, U.S.A.

Escuela Normal Dr. Mariano Indalecio Loza

This school full of history and remarkable architectural details is located on the corner of Bartolomé Mitre and Mariano I. Loza Streets. It has an access hall with several columns and a large yard where Dr. Mariano I. Loza’s Monument –its founders’- is located.

Solari Theater

The City of Goya also has an attractive theater which works as a cinema, a theater and a conference room. It was founded by Mr. Tomás Mazzanti in 1874 under the name of Centro Recreativo 25 de Mayo. It was the first theater built in the Republic of Argentina.

The architects and the manpower for its construction came from the City of La Plata. It contains ancient European furniture of the Viennese kind and its hall preserves its original design.

House of Culture

The House of Culture lies at 687, Juan E. Martínez Street. This post-colonial building was raised in 1845.

The ancient grand house used to be the gathering place for the nineteenth century celebrities, among which the Paraguayan General Francisco Solano and don Emilio Mitre, administrator of the Province, stand out.

At present, the grand house is part of the heritage of the Municipality of Goya. It houses San Martín Library, the Historical Archives and the City Museum.

Besides, musical activities and plastic art exhibitions are presented in this venue.
