Boca vs River: the Super Classic

Texts: Pablo Etchevers
The Super Classic

The unique rivalry between the two most popular teams in the country dates back from the early twentieth century, when most national football clubs were founded.

Boca and River share their origin and cradle, as both of them emerged hand in hand with the immigrants who settled on the southern Buenos Aires riverside. Boca, whose fans are nicknamed "xeneizes", was created on April 3, 1905. On May 25, four years before, Club Atlético River Plate had been founded a few blocks away. Later on, this team moved to the neighborhood of Núñez, one of the most prosperous areas in the city. Thus, they were nicknamed "millonarios" (which stands for "millionaire" in Spanish).

Both teams have a very juicy history with plenty of sport victories. There are countless memorable anecdotes and stories and, of course, players who built the history of this worldwide-known football derby. "The number 1 show in the world", according to those who were lucky enough to witness it.

The Super Classic

Though moves, goals and matches already played may be retold by books and fans, the truth is that every time they meet on the field, whether at the Monumental Stadium or at the Bombonera Stadium, these teams play as if history did not exist and as if it was their last chance to play the game.

Boca vs. River is experienced with passion and on the verge of collective madness. No sooner do the twenty-two players enter the field than thousands of fans follow the game on the stalls, on TV or on the radio. There is no doubt that this is one of the most exciting shows in the world.

Football Team

"Football Team"
is an oil painting Antonio Berni painted in 1954 in which a local neighborhood team is observed in one of the typical team formation pictures before they go out into the field: some of them standing and the rest squatting. One of the latter holds the typical ball with horizontal segments, the pride of those days, down against the ground.
