The deeds that led to the events of May 25, 1810, which would later come to be known as the historical May Revolution, remind us of the fact that no real transformation can be possible unless values and ideals are supported by the people.
During the entire week, which ended on the 25th, when the Primera Junta (First Assembly) was established, the neighbors and the militiamen started to gather spontaneously in front of the cabildo, with their black umbrellas under the heavy rain to demand a change.
Spain had fallen in the hands of Napoleon and thus, it was losing control over its colonies all over the world. Argentina was one of them. That epic and glorious popular demonstration that would later give birth to our country was the path towards becoming an independent nation, a fact that would be declared to the world on July 9, 1816, our Independence Day.
Having celebrated the Bicentennial of May Revolution means more than two centuries. It represents the historical chance of manifesting our voice freely and joyfully in the streets of our country, enjoying democracy beyond any political or ideological differences.
We feel proud to be Argentinian, but also to be part of the historical moment we are going through. We are aware of our wise decisions and also of our mistakes. We accept them with self-criticism. Furthermore, we are hopeful to find the same grandeur the patriots who settled the foundation stones of our Argentina dreamed of in the years to come.
We are Argentinian. That is who we were, who we are and, above all, who we wish to be. To continue writing our history depends on us.
